10 Things Forgiveness Is Not

This is a link to a blog post from Mars Hill church which summarizes a sermon by Mark Driscoll on repentance. In the sermon he lists 10 things forgiveness is not as he encourages his congregation to forgive those who have sinned against them. You can read the whole blog post here including a link to the sermon.

However, for those who don’t have the time here is a summary of the ten things:

  1. Forgiveness is not approving or diminishing sin
  2. Forgiveness is not enabling sin
  3. Forgiveness is not denying a wrongdoing
  4. Forgiveness is not waiting for an apology
  5. Forgiveness is not forgetting
  6. Forgiveness is not ceasing to feel the pain
  7. Forgiveness is not a onetime event
  8. Forgiveness is not neglecting justice
  9. Forgiveness is not trusting
  10. Forgiveness is not reconciliation

As everyone in life is sinned against I think this is a great list of things to read through and think about given that we are to do as much as is up to us to live at peace with others (Romans 12.18)

  1. Mark, is this the source link?

    • Steve, I just realised the way I wrote that was a little confusing. The link was at the end but it read like it should be at the start. I have now put it at the start so it is in both places 🙂
