Ewan’s birthday cake recipe

The highlight of Ewan’s year is his birthday party. He loves it and he talks about it all year round. There are three things he loves about parties, playing with his friends, the gifts! and the cake. This year we decided to have a football themed party so I was in search for an easy football themed cake and came up with this.

I made a double recipe of my friends chocolate cake recipe (see below) and a double recipe of butter cream frosting (see below). I followed the directions on how to assemble it from this site and hey presto, a football cake.

The directions on the website didn’t say to do a crumb coat but I find that helps make it look better (a crumb coat is a thin layer of frosting that you allow to harden a little, it helps all the crumbs stick to the cake, then when you do your real layer there are no crumbs in it and it looks better). Of course mine doesn’t look like the web version, but Ewan liked it, so mission accomplished 🙂
